Aloha, Victoria!
Many apologies for such a long delay in response to your email! It was so interesting to hear a story with so many parallels to my own! I grew up in central NJ (Hazlet), but lived for four years on a “farmette” as we called it, in Cream Ridge (the westernmost point in Monmouth County). That is where my love of goats took off – I raised 7 Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats who provided me with wonderful dairy products but even better companionship. For a short while on Maui, I worked at the Surfing Goat Dairy in Kula. We may have passed each other on Omaopio Road for all we know! I lived in Kihei for the duration of my short, two-year stint on Maui, but my heart was firmly planted in Up Country! I still dream of that magical place, but coming here was meant to be – it’s where I met my husband, and have grown professionally in ways I just couldn’t seem to on Maui. I love Portland, even though gloomy days like today make it a teeny bit more difficult:) I’ve kept my love of the country here in the city by having a riotous garden, and two little hens who provide us with delicious eggs, excellent slug control, and a lot of laughs. Sounds like you have kept a bigger four-legged friend in your life? I also used to work on a living history farm where I plowed fields with two draft horses! Did you know Longstreet Farm in Holmdel, NJ? That is where I worked, dressed like an 1890′s farm girl, doing cooking demonstrations on a wood stove and all other types of farm work, in the middle of the suburbs!
Thanks so much for reaching out! If you’d like to stay in touch, my email is jennifer@peatandprose.com
